As any major honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
