Why this Democratic Party is Hiding their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

This decision from the Democratic National Committee to block the release of its internal post-election analysis concerning the 2024 election seems remarkable but entirely predictable. Averse to frank assessments, the Democrats' governing body operates closer to a communications shop than an electoral entity committed to building grassroots capacities for winning elections.

A Culture of Conformity

Reluctant to break with the prevailing attitude of conformity, the DNC has remained under that legacy throughout this past year. Releasing the findings would have indicated that the leadership actually want to foster public discourse about the strategic failures that enabled Donald Trump to become president again. Yet, the DNC is proceeding as if there is little to glean following the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from the core mission," a rationale reportedly given for withholding the report.

Major Failures an Autopsy Would Have Explored

A genuine analysis of substance would tackle head-on certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disenchantment: Failing to retain of millions of voters who voted for the party's candidate in 2020 proved pivotal during the tight recent race.
  • A Choice to Run: The stubborn choice of the incumbent to run again, coupled with a very late exit, has been criticized as denying the party's base of open primaries.
  • Failing Everyday Americans: Amid inflation, the electoral effort allegedly accommodating powerful financial backers without successfully attempting to confront the role of big business.
  • The Foreign Policy Impact: An unwillingness to reconsider an approach on the situation in Gaza reportedly led to losing many voters, particularly among young people, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Support: Research indicates a huge decline in votes for the candidate among young voters.

A History of Evasion

This refusal fits a recurring tendency of evading difficult realities. It echoes a situation where virtually every elected Democrat in Washington went along with a sitting president's decision for seeking another term until a poor public debate performance led to a reversal.

Concurrently, overwhelming numbers within the party's base had been repeatedly informing researchers that they opposed the incumbent to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Questions

A substantive report might also investigate issues about financial allocations, including the amounts flowed to insider consultants and advertising contractors over the course of an electoral effort which expended a colossal amount over a few months.

A Larger Implication

Fundamentally, the blockage surrounding this report highlights an allegiance toward the existing power structure that oversaw a losing presidential campaign. The signal to the party's base – which includes millions of loyal volunteers – is that they do not be trusted to know what the insiders claim to have learned based on a report drawing from extensive interviews.

A political entity unable to honestly assess where it went wrong will struggle to climb out of the cycle which was so beneficial to the rival party.
